Penarth Camp Learns Bushcraft Survival Skills

Penarth Woodcraft Folk May Camp 2005

Penarth Woodcraft Folk are a relatively new group based in South Wales and held their third camp in West Wales this May. Fantastic weather plus a beautiful location helped make it the best camp ever. Tucked away in the remote hills of Carmarthenshire both Elfins and Pioneers learnt camping skills such as cooking on wood fires, pitching tents, and being a clan member.

A grant of £5000 from “Enfys” helped to fund extra tents, equipment, a group marquee and “Bushcraft” training for the adults. The training run by Survival School helped the adults to learn skills such as friction fire lighting, shelter building and foraging to pass on to the young people.  A highlight of the camp was watching Max, Joel and Joseph aged 6 and 8 years carefully light their own fires without a match, they were so proud.  The young people also made musical instruments from plumbing off cuts and gave a fantastic recital for the owners of the land. This combined with lots of play, craft activities, nature walks, cooking damper on the fire and much singing made it a camp to definitely remember.

Penarth Woodcraft Folk are helping to arrange a Welsh Woodcraft Camp at the end of July this year, if you are interested please get in touch megan@cockerill-evans.freeserve.co.uk.
