Refugee Week June 14th - 20thPublished on Wednesday June 09 2010Why not use your group night to take action in the Right to Refuge campaign? The Communications Group have a few actions you can take, depending on how much time you've got. If you have 5 minutes – go straight to the top! In the pack below is a letter addressed to Theresa May, the Home Secretary. It asks her to support the demands of the Right to Refuge campaign to make life fairer for refugees and asylum seekers in the UK. - Simply sign it (as a group or as individuals) and send it to: The Right Honourable The Secretary of State for the Home Office The Home Office Direct Communications Unit 2 Marsham Street London SW1P 4DF If you have 10 minutes – urge your local MP to support the campaign - Download the template letter in the pack to write to your local MP. If you have 15 minutes – make links with local young refugees or asylum seekers - If you’ve got internet access, look up your local refugee or asylum seeker support service. Call or email them and invite them to visit your group – or offer to visit them. You can also find out what’s going on near you in Refugee Week at www.refugeeweek.org.uk and choose an event to attend. If you have 30 minutes – create publicity for the campaign. Telling your local paper or radio station about the campaign would be a really powerful way to spread the message about refugees’ and asylum seekers’ rights. In the download below is a template for a press release but you could turn it into a letter to your local paper too. - Re-write the press release to include a quote from someone in your group, and make sure you mention any action you’ve taken or plan to take as part of the campaign. - Post or email the press release to the newsdesk of the paper / radio station you’ve chosen and follow it up with a phone call to encourage them to print / broadcast it. Support all these actions with campaign postcards, which you can order from Folk Office. A sample have been sent to all Pioneer, Venturer and DF group contacts. Finally, let us know how it goes! Email campaign@woodcraft.org.uk or call the office to talk to Chloë on 020 7703 4173.
