Bradford District Feeds Annual Gathering Delegates

Published on Wednesday June 24 2009

As part of Annual Gathering 2009 members from Woodcraft Folk’s Bradford district bravely volunteered to order, manage and cook all of the event’s meals.  Arriving on Friday morning the group collected a large delivery of ingredients in anticipation of a hungry gathering.   Bradford group leader Clare Connolly thought the task would make a great challenge “we have only had one district camp in 15 years and decided to take on the catering to help us function more as a team, and it has”

There were 12 dedicated kitchen staff, preparing and cooking three square meals a day.  This might sound simple but the canteen area was a hive of activity from early morning until well after supper.  Volunteers maintained a hot drinks stand throughout the day where delegates could help themselves to a range of drinks, fruit and biscuits.  Lunch was a delicious range of salads and bread accompanied by an excellent home-made hummus.  Saturday evening’s supper proved to be a further treat as delegates feasted on home made vegetarian curry, dahl and nan bread.

It wasn’t all hard work in the kitchen though.  On Saturday afternoon the volunteers employed ventures and pioneers to make a large tray of chocolate pudding - later enjoyed by everyone!

Like other aspects of annual gathering a real effort was made to minimise the event’s environmental impact.  All ingredients were sourced from a local co-op and Suma Wholefoods and the entire weekend’s menu was vegetarian and mostly vegan.
