Tolpuddle Martyrs Celebrations

Published on Wednesday April 22 2009

This year sees the 175th anniversary of the great demonstration to demand the release of the Tolpuddle Martyrs, who were imprisoned for forming the first trade union. Events will be held in London on 25th April and Dorset on 17th-19th July.

The Woodcraft Folk is running the children's activities at the London event. Volunteers are being sought to run small stalls with all the usual favourite games like magnetic fishing and tent memory game. Also any districts who can lend the following equipment: Gazebos, badge-makers, banners, other Woodcraft Folk displays e.g. photos.

The London event will feature music from Martin Carthy, Billy Bragg and Graham Moore.  Event coordinator, Clare Turner said "We are asking for volunteers/supporters to help out on the day by running a few stalls and helping to promote Woodcraft Folk. The event starts with a parade of banners down Caledonian Road which Woodcraft Folk members are welcome to join. It would be great to have some Woodcraft banners in the parade. The parade ends in Edward square where there will be music, stalls, Playout and many other activities".
