Playout Goes Small-scale In Lambeth

Published on Tuesday December 16 2008

The team at Lambeth Playout, the Woodcraft Folk's mobile playscheme in South London, have won funding for the creation of "Playbox", a set of resources in a box on wheels that will allow smaller-scale projects across the area.

Local District Fellows will receive training in mentoring and in the Playout programme, and can then take resources to local parks using the Playbox. The programme aims to reach a broad variety of children in the Lambeth area, promoting Woodcraft Folk's strategic objective to be "open and accessible to all."

"It's still in its infancy, but we hope that by shifting the emphasis to lots of smaller Playout facilitators we can reach more children," said Roxanne Matthews, the Lambeth Playout coordinator.

In line with the Woodcraft ethos, Playout activities focus on co-operative, outdoor play. The project aims to offer a safe environment for children in disadvantaged areas of Lambeth to have fun, make friends and learn new games. The scheme it opens its facilities to members and non-members alike. Creative activities usually take place at local parks and a Playout bus tours the area, setting up facilities where they are most needed.

“By operating in parks we are more accessible to a wider range of children. We can also offer the opportunity to interact with nature in an inner-city environment. We believe that this benefits the health and well-being of our local kids,” Roxanne added.
