Comments: | My brother Robin and i were woodcrafters in the late 70's-early 8o's. We had the best time!! I remember camping in Hazlemere and Rottingdean. I still camp regularly and owe my love of the outdoors and nature to the Woodcraft folk!! I also know how to dig a toilet and what to do in the event of a nuclear strike (well it was the 80's!). Hooray! I miss those days..... |

I was fotunate to attend an International camp in Utrecht, Holland I think this was in 1946/7 and believe we wer the first group of children to go overseas after WW11. My group folk name was Kingfisher |

Comments: | How Folk! This was the call to gain the attention of and to obtain quiet from lodge members when I was a Woodcraft member from 1947 to 1951. I belonged to a lodge (local group) called "Shanamac" every lodge had it's own identity. The badge we wore was similar to the one I see you now have, but ours had the pine trees one each side of the rising sun. (youth and maiden side by side to the world new hope we're bringing) This was the opening line of the Woodcraft folk's anthem.and the two pine trees were the youth and the maiden. The organisation in those days was run very much on the line of the first nation Americans (Indians) As such we chose a name by which we wanted to be known. Usually that of an animal or flower. So as well as the Woodcraft Pine tree/rising sun badge we also wore a badge depicting our chosen name. The problem was finding someone able to embroider a badge with the desired picture. My name was "Antilope" We were called by these chosen names. We all wore green shirts with laces at the top in place of buttons. We went to camps very often and would undergo various tests. The one I could never complete was the "silent tongue test." For this you had to go one whole day without speaking. I could tell you many more stories about my time as a Woodcrafter but I'm sure you would all get bored. I am just so pleased that the Woodcraft Folk are still going strong. Good Luck and God Bless. |
